I used Rust-Oleum "steel" wheel paint. My old paint was Dupli-Color "graphite" wheel paint. On that, I just sprayed it and lightly sanded it, giving a brushed bare metal look. I almost did the same this time, but decided instead to do a clear coat. For a $30 rattle can job, it looks decent.

Vale of Ffestiniog

Vale of Ffestiniog

When the Ffestiniog Railway won the fight for the Welsh Highland, they obtained 2 Bo-Bo Funkey Diesels along with the Garratts (not pictured) both Funkey's were largely worn out, and too large for the FR Loading Gauge, National Power sponsored the overhaul and rebuild of a Funkey and is seen here in 2002 painted in National Power livery and looking like a narrow gauge Class 58 Diesel
(they say its based on a 59 ?)
Vale of Ffestiniog is the preferred Diesel for off peak services, she has been out of use for some time due to loaning parts to keep her sister Carnarfon Castle (not pictured) running on the Welsh highland, however, she returned to service during 2008 re-painted into FR house Green as still carried by Upnor Castle (not pictured) on the Welsh Highland

This locomotive is a 335 HP turbo-charged B-B diesel-hydraulic built by CH Funkey & Co (Pty) Ltd of Alberton, near Johannesburg, South Africa, for a diamond mine in Namibia. It arrived at the FR on 16 October 1993, one of three engines purchased from Pretoria Portland Cement Ltd, New Brighton Cement Works, Port Elizabeth, Cape Province, South Africa. The second loco, now Castell Caernarfon, is in service on the Welsh Highland Railway (Caernarfon), its superstructure being unchanged. A third loco was involved, details below.

When the two Funkeys arrived in 1993, there was a deliberate decision to treat them differently but with a caveat for "later on" offering the possibility of them working together.

When they arrived they were equipped with quite complex electrical control systems on them that allowed them to run in multiple. This system even included switches on the seats to make sure the driver was sat down. They had tachographs installed with discs still in showing impressive high speeds. They were festooned with safety cut-out switches most of which were shorted out to get them to run.

Of the two loco's, one had evidently been crashed at some time and had had a new cab made out of steel. This loco was selected for trials on the Festiniog on the grounds that the gas axe doesn't work so well on fibreglass! In this form it ran several trials on the FR.

The one with the intact fibreglass body (now Castell Caernarfon), was selected for the WHR and it was decided to rewire and rework the control systems to a simplified pattern. To this end it was fitted with Bowden cable drives for the throttle and gear selection and a simplified electrical scheme but with the deadman systems needed to single man these days. Paul Martin did the rewiring of the loco at Boston Lodge. In this form it did several test trips on the FR but of course only across the cob.

The point of the caveat and "later on" reference was that at the time it was decided to do the simple rebuild with the possibility of doing a more "Vale of Ffestiniog" type job on it later. The theory was that if it was sent to Dinas in its tall form it would suffice until the lines were connected and by then it would be due an overhaul the extent of which could be decided at the time.

Very much more powerful than previous FR internal combustion units, the Funkey provides an attraction in its own right as well as reserve power able to handle the heaviest trains. The original body was, however, far too large for the FR loading gauge, and as a result the loco has received a new body with a cab at each end. Work on this was done with the generous support of National Power (now Innogy). The FR's loco originally carried a livery similar to the Class 59's operated by the National Power Rail Unit at Ferrybridge for the transport of coal and limestone to power stations, while the name Vale of Ffestiniog is in keeping with the names carried by the National Power locos, as well as denoting the valley through which part of the FR runs. The transformation of the Funkey into Vale of Ffestiniog was the main part of the FR's participation in the 1997 Year of Engineering Success campaign.

The locomotive is of the B-B classification in diesel terms but is rather unique in that all wheels are coupled mechanically in a similar manner to that of a Climax steam locomotive. The power unit is a Cummins NT 855 L4 big cam diesel engine producing 335 HP at 2100 RPM cooled by a fan cooled radiator. The diesel engine drives through a torque converter into a constant mesh epicyclic gearbox giving forward and reverse gears and was manufactured by Allison of America. The final drive is a drop-down gearbox integral with the speed/direction gearbox having two output flanges from which the cardan shafts drive to the final drive gearboxes. The gears are engaged by hydraulically operated clutches through an integral selection valve, as is the direction function, with the hydraulic power being supplied by an integral pump. Engine and gearbox oil is cooled by the cooling system through separate heat exchangers. The final drive gearboxes, one to each axle and coupled by cardan shafts, are axle hung with t

The wondrous Red Shed, the most perfect Peugeot 306 I've ever owned*. Now for sale.

The wondrous Red Shed, the most perfect Peugeot 306 I've ever owned*. Now for sale.

As I'm now officially a commuter, I've had to go and buy a proper car that I can put proper miles on. It's hello, shiny new car (and boxes of tissues and cushions on the rear parcel shelf and possibly string- acked driving gloves if I'm not careful) and goodbye Red Shed, possibly the most amazing Peugeot 306 I have ever owned.

If you know of anyone looking for a reliable (I kid you not) car that is happy hauling loads and generally pootling around, but can still get up to 80 on the motorway (ahem) then please point them my way. I am not looking for more than ?300, and may take considerably less if bribed with doughnuts. Also happy to swap for a pair of Maxle Revelations in good condition.

Amongst the Red Shed's various outstanding features:

* It's red. Ferraris are also red. You get the picture.

* I owned this car when I met my fiancee. This is proof positive that the Shed will make you successful with the ladies (or gents).

* Automatically immune from being cut up by Audi drivers - they know you don't care if it gets dinged.

* New exhaust about a year ago.

* At least one new tyre. Possibly two.

* One of the tyres says it was originally filled with helium. This makes the car both lighter and squeakier at the same time.

* A Sunroof. That is waterproof. And opens and closes. And yet remains waterproof. After closing. I make no guaruntees for waterproofness while open.

* An Alternative Pastel Wing. This car might be red, but one front wing is a lovely pinky pastel colour that tells discerning motorists that you are a connoisseur. When I am rich beyond the dreams of Croesus, I may well commission an Alternative Pastel Wing of the Tate Modern. If you bought this car, you could live the same dream.

* Five wheels - all attached to the car! At the same time! One of them doesn't go around when the car is in motion. I believe this is because it's the spare wheel, but you might want to get a garage to verify this before purchase.

* Five (manual) gears, or six if you count reverse. Awesome.

* Utterly reliable if driven regularly. Might use a new battery (or a recharge of the three year old battery) if not. Worked just fine in the snows recently.

* 1.8 litre petrol engine with Raw Power(tm).

* Three (count 'em) original plastic hubcaps. The fourth is somewhere in the woods on top of Box Hill. My fiancee knows where it is, as she was driving the shed at the time, hit the pothole that dislodged the hubcap, and saw it bounding away with all the joi de vivre of a recently-fed labrador into the woods.

* Central locking.

* Front electric windows work. The rear ones? Not so well.

* Colour coded bumpers. If the car was a sort of washed out grey.

* My friends Mark and Liz used to own the Red Shed. They actually looked after it. Mark tells me he even used to wash it and even put colour restorer on the Alternative Pastel Wing. I still have the bottle of colour restorer Mark gave me. It's probably not gone off, and I'll throw it into the deal.

To be serious for a moment, this car is actually rather good; I needed it to do around 6,000 miles a year, mostly on motorways, and that's what it's done for the last four or five years. I've had it serviced once a year. I've bought stuff for it when it needed it, and generally been quite nice to it. It's got an MOT until October (from memory), and tax until the end of April. If you need a stopgap car - or a banger that will be fine for years to come if not driven hard, then drop me a line. It's an N registration 306 XT with 129,000 miles on the clock.

* This is the only Peugeot 306 I have ever owned

The Harold Lloyd Comedy Collection Vol. 3

The third volume in the Harold Lloyd Comedy Collection is close to the standard of excellence set by the first two installments of this essential series. Actually, Lloyd's 1928 Speedy, his last silent picture, would justify this two-disc set by itself. The film packs as many great gags per minute as any Lloyd film, and it also has one of his sweetest love stories (a courtship scene in the back of a moving van, with Harold rearranging the furniture to approximate a cozy living room). But the film is also notable for its extensive location shooting in New York City. There's a sequence involving Babe Ruth (as himself) in the back of Harold's speeding taxi, and the filmmakers also captured one of the Bambino's record-setting 60 home runs from the 1927 campaign. The sequences shot at Coney Island, with some wonderfully hair-raising (and understandably obsolete) rides is gorgeous and historically valuable. Meanwhile, check out the stunning horse-drawn streetcar accident caught on film, and then listen to the commentary for an explanation of how it happened and was incorporated into the storyline.
Hot Water (1924) also goes into the time capsule of great Lloyd features, even if it feels like a handful of shorter films shoehorned together. This one gets its charm from the basic domestic situation (Harold takes the family out for a spin in the new car, faces down his meddling mother-in-law). It turns to haunted-house jokes toward the end, which gives Lloyd a chance to do his electric-hair bit, a familiar gag from his films. Like Hot Water, For Heaven's Sake (1926) is an hour long; this funny one casts Lloyd as a rich twit who takes up with a girl whose father runs a homeless mission. It has a great love scene in a slum (the moon in the background turns out to be a neon sign) and another hair-raising chase. Just how did they get the shot of Lloyd on a speeding bus heading through an intersection with two trains crossing?
There's one talking picture, Movie Crazy (1932), a somewhat routine film from Lloyd's increasingly unsuccessful stint in talkies. He plays a young rube who arrives in Hollywood certain he'll be the next "new face." The silent shorts, of which there are many here, are better. Check out Haunted Spooks from 1920, which has its share of good jokes but which is also fascinating for its place in Lloyd's career. He suffered an off-set accident midway through shooting, costing him the thumb and forefinger of his right hand; after a hiatus, he completed shooting with a prosthetic glove (which he used in films thereafter). A heartfelt 15-minute documentary on Lloyd's palatial L.A. estate, Greenacres, uses copious home-movie footage to show the marvelous place and give a hint of Lloyd's homey, likable personality. --Robert Horton

Wonder Wheel, Coney Island

Wonder Wheel, Coney Island

The landmarked Coney Island Wonder Wheel.

Current redevelopment efforts may (ha, most likely, this is NYC after all) soon remove the Wonder Wheel and the Parachute jump as the primary features of the Coney Island skyline and replace them with several large scale hotels, an indoor amusement area and SHOPPING SHOPPING SHOPPING.

Redevelopment of the area was promised 20 or more years ago and never quite got there. Currently the Thor development corporation owns most of the land that comprises Coney Island and is working with the city to come up with plans to build up the area. The area is never going back to what it was during the 30's and 40's before air conditioning let people stay at home during the summer instead of heading down to the beach or up to resorts in the Catskills to escape the heat.

As much as the area badly needs the reconstruction, the question is how much of its character will remain and what will draw people to Coney Island after the redevelopment work is done.

Coney Island 2003 - The Wonder Wheel

Oh, Wonder Wheel, how I love thee. 150 feet tall, proudly revolving counter-clockwise for interesting views of Coney Island and environs. The cars on the inner part of the wheel swing freely on an oval track; you can see how they swing out by the edge of the wheel on the left-hand side when the wheel revolves. The outer cars stay mercifully fixed in place, but there's never a line for them (even though the swinging cars almost outnumber the fixed cars two to one.) The largest Ferris Wheel in operation until London's Millennium Eye opened up, the Wonder Wheel is a bargain at 3 bucks a ride and can really freak out a first-timer.
